S.O.S. Navigation and Control

Welcome to the Security On-line Support, or the 'S.O.S.' for short. The S.O.S. is the foundation module of the RUSecure™ suite of Information Security products and has been designed to be quick and easy to find the information you need. It has been developed using the popular Microsoft 'Help' system and, because of this, the use and navigation of the S.O.S. may already be familiar, especially if you are used to using the Internet Explorer for browsing Internet Web sites.

N.B.   This evaluation copy of the S.O.S. contains approximately 25% of the advice, guidance and policies included in the registered version. However, each of the chapters and sub chapters contains representative samples from the registered version of RUSecure™- Security On-line Support. This is done to facilitate your evaluation process and to protect the interests of registered users.

The viewing area of the SOS is divided into 2 distinct areas with a button bar across the top. In the left hand window is the Contents Tree, showing the contents and layout of RUSecure's SOS; and the right hand window is where the current topic is displayed. As you navigate through the Contents Tree, and select topics, so the right hand window will also update.

N.B. The left and right panes are distinct windows. Therefore scrolling when the left hand window is selected, will scroll the chapters and topics, whereas scrolling in the right hand window will scroll the displayed topic up and down. A single click in the respective window will ensure that it scrolls as you expect!

Next to each topic in the Contents Tree in the left hand window, is an icon which conveys its suggested readership. Whilst Information Security is relevant to everyone within the organisation, including contractors and temporary staff, not all subjects can be acted upon by everyone e.g. setting up access controls on the server is a technical task and is only of direct relevance to specific personnel. Likewise, many topics are relevant to everyone; and some are of particular relevance to the Information Security Officer. See the table below.

Suggested Primary Readership

Standard Office Routines. Topics are relevant to all persons, irrespective of position, seniority or specialisation.

Technical or semi-technical. Directly relevant to those who are both specialist IT, and those who have a responsibility for IT.

Topics which will be of particular relevance to the Information Security Officer.

N.B. For the evaluation version of the RUSecure™ S.O.S., it is those topic icons with a 'red star' that contain the representative samples from the registered version of the S.O.S. - namely, , and . These will always be the first few topics of each chapter and sub chapter, to give a broad representation of the scope of coverage.

In general, office staff are expected to focus more upon topics designated as Standard Office Routines. Technical staff, and those responsible for technical matters will additionally consider those topics designated as Technical; and the Information Security Officer will consider all topics to be within their remit, with specific topics identified as of particular relevance to them.
