Managing Remote Data Stores

Remote Data Stores are located at a distance from your main processing site. The distance should be adequate to ensure that a major disaster, such as a fire or explosion at your main site, will not affect the Remote Data Store. Sufficient data should be stored there to allow restoration, if your primary data is destroyed. See Disaster Recovery Plan.

Remote data stores face the same threats as on-site data stores, but there are some additional threats which are particular to them. See On-Site Data Stores.

  • Theft of data may render it difficult or impossible to meet your business requirements, or may be used fraudulently against your organisation.

  • Remote data stores are often un-staffed for much of the day, also media are kept there undisturbed for long periods, therefore theft is a distinct possibility. You should ensure that physical security is adequate.
  • Ensure that access to the remote store is only undertaken under dual control. In any case, this may be a Health and Safety requirement.
  • Always transport media to and from the remote data store in locked boxes under dual control.
  • Avoid giving out the exact location of your remote store.
  • You should periodically check that these procedures are being observed.

  • Ensure that the remote data store has a high degree of environmental protection.
